Quote of the Day
There is not any memory with less satisfaction than the memory of some temptation we resisted.
—James Branch Cabell (1879-1958)
Verse of the Day
Listen, son of mine. . . listen carefully. Keep these thoughts ever in mind; let them penetrate deep within your heart, for they will mean real life for you and radiant health. Above all else, guard your affections. —Proverbs 4:20-23
And then. . .
My father was not only my best friend, but also my hero. I watched him live
his faith. Many of the lessons he taught were brief glimpses of what made him
real.
During a difficult period in my teenage years, I needed some things from
the upstairs bathroom. I thought everyone was asleep and as I slipped through
the hallway passed my parents bedroom, I saw my dad on his knees praying. I
knew he was praying for me and he never knew that I saw him.
The day before my wedding (31 years ago), we were driving together. There
was a comment on the radio about husbands who had extra-marital affairs. I
asked him how I could be sure that it would never happen in my marriage. He
said, "Just don't look." We talked about never allowing ourselves to
be put in a position of possible compromise. Just looking already "hurts
your wife."
As I've traveled on business trips alone, I've thought about those words
often. I've never eaten at the hotel bar or gone to the happy hour
alone.
