Quote of the Day
A bone to the dog is not charity. Charity is the bone shared with the dog, when you are just as hungry as the dog.
—Jack London
Verse of the Day
But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing,
4 so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.
—Matthew 6:3-5
Story of the Day. . .
After being assigned to a new congregation in a very poor
area of Mexico, the pastor decided to visit the farmers in the area and get a
feel for their spirituality. At the first farmhouse, the old farmer was
plowing in the field. After the introductions, the farmer offered him the
hospitality of the evening meal.
After the simple but adequate meal, the pastor asked,
“If you had two huge mansions given to you, what would you do with them?”
The old farmer didn’t even blink an eye. “Well, I would move into one with
my family, and also invite our relatives, since it would have many rooms. The
other mansion, I would donate to the orphanage so that they would have more
room.” That is very generous of you, said the pastor.
“If you had two pickup trucks, what would you do?”
Again, without any hesitation, “I would use one to take my crops to the
market and offer to help all my friends with theirs. The other, I would give
to the church so that they could help people.”
“If you had two donkeys, what would you do?” The old
farmer stroked his chin in deep thought. After several minutes, the pastor
asked, “What is the matter?” “Well,” replied the old farmer, “that
is a much harder question.” “Why?” asked the pastor. “I have two
donkeys.”
It is much easier to be generous with what we don’t have than with what we have.
